From August 1st to the 15th, there is a fast called the Dormition Fast which precedes the falling asleep of Mary the Theotokos and her resurrection and assumption up into heaven. Now, my wife and I observed the fast and here is what I learned…we are poor at fasting. Sure we ate the appropriate food according to the calendar, but we overate. I think we gained more weight while “fasting” than if we ate regular food. I think we lost sight on the prayer and discipline part of the fast. It did make me realize that we are still slaves to the flesh, and with God’s help, maybe we can learn not to stuff our face when we feel a hunger pang. Maybe praying when we feel that pang will help?
